Tokelau may soon become the world’s first nation of island to get its electricity solely from solar power. The three atolls of Tokelau are phasing out use of diesel to generate electricity and have installed over 4000 solar panels. The first of the atolls to get solar panels is almost installed and the remaining panels are expected to be installed by September.
Tokelau’s annual revenues are under $500,000 and the national budget is $2.8 million. Currently diesel powers electricity that costs the nation over $1 million a year. Even though it will cost $7.5 million to install the solar panels, the panels will have nearly two decades of life before major maintenance is required.
