The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has hiked the tariff for wind power producers in the state to Rs 3.51 per unit, after its new tariff order was passed. Windmills which will be installed between August 1 this year and July 31, 2014 will be allowed to sell the power they generate at this rate to the state electricity distribution company, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO).

For windmills commissioned before May 15, 2006, will be allowed the tariff of Rs 2.75 a kWhr while those commissioned between May 15, 2006, and September 18, 2008, will get Rs 2.90 per unit. For those commissioned between September 19, 2008 and July 31, 2012, the rate is fixed at Rs 3.39 per unit.

The Commission has not accepted the plea to make the tariff applicable retrospectively from April 1, 2011, as demanded by many. The previous ‘control period’ had ended on March 31, 2011, but was extended thrice and finally the new tariff order are issued.
