The first meeting of Joint Working Group (JWG) of India and Bangladesh was held recently following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the premiers of the two countries.
Tapos Kumar Roy, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power of Bangladesh led the visiting delegation while Alok Srivastava, Joint Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) headed the Indian side. The two countries have signed a India-Bangladesh Renewable Energy Cooperation in September last year when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Dhaka.
In the meeting, both the countries presented the current status and growth potential of renewable energy of India and Bangladesh and identified five areas of cooperation including information exchange, capacity building, institutional support, technical support and Research & Development (R&D).
India has also invited professionals from Bangladesh to visit the institutions, field installations in India besides participating in the specialised training programme. India also expressed its keen interest in learning more about the off-grid Solar Home System (SHS) programme in Bangladesh. The meeting also agreed on a joint seminar focused on the identified areas of cooperation. The next meeting will be held in Dhaka early next year.
